Hunwick To Colorado

Matt Hunwick, it appears, is the first casualty of the Boston Bruins’ salary cap dilemma. The young, mobile defenseman has been traded to the Colorado Avalanche for former Boston University Terrier Colby Cohen, now in his first full season of professional hockey. The move clears $1.45 million from the B’s cap and reportedly allows for the activation of Marc Savard later this week.

If that’s all it takes to bring back your potential number one center and, hopefully, jumpstart a team gone stagnant, then it’s not a bad move. The B’s need something badly right now, losers of 4 of their last 5 and looking flat out horrible at times like in Sunday’s vicious beating at the hands of the Atlanta Thrashers. A shake-up like this is as good as anything. The return of Savard could help immensely if he’s anything resembling the player he once was.

That, however, remains to be seen.

Cohen, meanwhile, was a standout at BU on defense, is 6′-2″, 200 lbs. and was a second round pick of the Avalanche in 2007. In 2009 he helped the Terriers win the national title with the game winning goal in overtime against Miami of Ohio and was named Outstanding Player of the Tournament. As an NHL prospect, he’d fall in the upper middle range, the B’s obviously hoping he’ll develop into the offensive minded, puck moving defenseman that Matt Hunwick, with a bit more consisteny, might have been. For the moment, he will report to the Providence Bruins.

Meanwhile, in Boston, Adam McQuaid will return to the line-up in Hunwick’s place, bringing a bit more size and agression. Oddly enough, Hunwick looked like he had taken a page out of McQuaid’s book against the Thrashers when he threw down with Evander Kane, one of the few Bruins showing any battle in the game.

Off to Colorado you go.

Hunwick looked pretty decent last night, in his first game on the Avalanche squad. Unfortunately the Avs couldn’t get it all to gel. They looked like they were back on their heels most of the game. I think Hunny will fit in fine tho.

He’s a decent little player for sure. He can skate and move the puck, which is his best asset. The Bruins actually used him up on left wing a few times one season and he didn’t fare to badly. It’s his strength in his own zone that can be the drawback. Maybe in the free skating West he can find his comfort zone.

I see the Avs traded away Scott Hannan to Washington as their next move.

But enough about that stuff, Ozzy. How you been, brother? Been a long time since we were last chased out of an all you can eat Chinese buffet by it’s incoherently screaming proprietors. Things good out in the Mountains? I heard you a rumor you got hitched.

I hope to god she can cook.

Yeah, I can see your points on Hunwick, but I think he will fare better here in the West. Hannan will be missed. I’d never heard of him before he came here, but he sure made a huge impact in a few short seasons. I wish him well wherever he goes.

Chinese buffets are yesterday’s news Ken. I’ve moved on and up to Brazilian Barbacoa. Brazilians have respect for someone that can put their grill-masters to the test.

Things are good in the mountains. Yep, I got hitched. A cute little thing that makes life much more bearable. She can cook, but I still do the majority of the cooking around the house. Normal people just can’t grasp the monumental amounts of food it takes to keep a figure like this. I bought a side of all-natural grass fed beef this fall. She asked if that should last all year. I laughed and said “All year? That’s just for this weekend!” Thought I might have lost her there. Fainted dead away. She has a good sense of humor tho, so all is good now.
