Fun Winter Hockey Hats

So someone recently visited this blog by typing “fun winter hockey hats” into Google and I wasn’t sure whether to be offended, amused or confused. The one thing I was certain of, however, was that some pointless in depth investigation of the matter was needed.

First off, I figured it had something to do with the trend I started back in ’74 when I debuted The Look. The one that would define a legend.

Namely this:

Ken Socrates Fun Winter Hockey Hat

Can you say Suave? Without laughing, that is?

Now I don’t know if it’s because the seventies are big again in the NHL (who are always a bit behind the times, fashion-wise) but it wasn’t long before folks around the league got bored with handlebar moustaches and jumped on my bandwagon.

First off, as you might expect, fashion whore himself, Sean Avery.

Sean Avery Fur Hat

Just because you hold a girl's hand in public, doesn't mean you're straight, Sean.

That was to be expected. Avery is a man crying out for help in so many ways, aping my look was the fashion equivalent of a couple chops in back of the shin pads behind the play. Annoying but I’m not taking the bait, girlfriend.

The next was unexpected, however, and humbling to say the least.

Don Cherry Fur Hat

Grapes, my old friend, you honour me.

When Don Cherry steals your look, it’s a moment of great pride. Of course, the man is going to put his own spin on things and this time was no exception. The kind of pride I felt seeing this could only be matched by the same sort of swelling emotions that all Canada experienced while doing the same.

Now, when Grapes does something, then people really take notice and it officially becomes a potential trend.

So much so that even my bodyguard Dave got in on the action.

Bodyguard Dave

Et tu, Dave? Et tu?

Whatever. I’m actually somewhat used to this sort of thing.

Still I wonder if there’s more to it than just one fabulously furry, man’s man kind of style statement. Things get more intriguing when I type these same terms into Google Images. Check out page one, loyal readers, and see if you don’t recognize a familiar face amongst the assorted results. Kind of Curious, you must admit. Is there a connection there or is that some sort of mystical coincidence? You tell me.

Page two gives us this guy and now I start to see where we might fit into the picture because that, folks, is clearly one of my people right there. Clear-fucking-lee.

It makes more sense further in when you see how much Bruins stuff is mixed in. Okay, so Bruins fans like Fun Winter Hockey Hats. I get it. The Northeast is a place where funky headgear, low temperatures and good times go together like Pee-Wee and porn. It’s all starting to make sense.

Then I see this.

Good God No

Make it go away!

And it all came crashing down around my ears. I’ve been curled in a fetal ball ever since searching for my happy place. If anyone can explain what HGW and that guy have in common, please have at it.

Otherwise it’s down to the docks to resume my clam shucking career and I wish you all the best.

One Response to “Fun Winter Hockey Hats”

Oh man, I can’t stop laughing. Not at you but at the Google page. Who knew? I think the problem is that not nearly enough bloggers post photos of themselves in cute winter hats. (Last time I checked there wasn’t even a Flickr group for [Girls In] winter hats, and there’s groups for any fashion/fetish you can think of.) Got to admit, my comment that that combines my love of hockey, winter hats, and not smiling in photos was my fave line I’ve written there (in 2009).

Anyway…congrats on the look and the imitators it’s spawned!
